<HTML>The above named are the most used on fakes other names found on repros are F.O. ( FRIEDRICH ORTH ) and GWL ( GEBR. WEGERHOFF A LÃœDENSCHEID ). The best way of detecting a fake is by it\'s craftsmenship , poor or sloppy work was never tolerated in nazi Germany ! The materials used declined as the war went on but the quality of the work to make it never did. U-boat bagdes were never made from lead or aluminium , early war examples were of solid brass with a fire gilt finish process no longer in use today and later from a grey potmetal called KRIEGSMETAL with a cheap gilt wash over it. Over time this cheap metal would absorb the gilt wash to give this badge a very unpleaseant look, even when not that old ! Sometimes the repros of today look better than the originals ! The originals were either die struck or cast , here is where you tell an original from the fakes, real ones are well made with CRISP and CLEAR details with NO cast pock marks etc. Any real badge that had poor details or surface flaws would have been thrown back into the melting pot. Poor details and shoddy work like the badges pin attached at an angle or a misshapen swastika or eagle is a clear sign that this is a fake and NOT \"A LATE WAR BADGE \" That line is as old as the hills and B.S. !!
The U-boat clasp is much easier to tell if it is real or fake because ALL were made from ZINC with a copper plating and an olive-bronze top wash that was baked on, THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS !! NONE were made from brass or tombak , only the fakes are!! There are alot of fakes out there that are of a very high quality so read the above and follow it and you will not get burned , if you think you are getting a rare one off original peice most likely you just added another fake to the collection :( </HTML>
