<HTML> Dear Sir, I agree that no human remains should be touched in any manner as the U-boat is a war grave, although it does need to be indentified as to which U-boat it is. As for private artifacts, they also should remain untouched except for the sole purpose of identifying the wreck. Bottomline, if something needs to be brought to the surface to identify the wreck so be it. Once the identity of the U-boat is known, the artifact needs to be placed back at it's original location for others to enjoy as well.
I am very displeased about some of the wreck diving that has been done on U-boats as described in Henry Keats book "Dive into History, Volume 3, U-Boats". In the book he described how the diver, Burton H. Mason and four other divers from Connecticut in the U.S. brought up the remains of a crewman found in the conning tower of the U-853. The German government was very displeased with the divers and his friends actions and the crewman is now buried in cemetery in Newport, Connecticut. As well as disturbing the dead, this diver and his friends also sawed off an 8 inch upper portion of the U-853 attack periscope and brought up life rafts. Who knows what else they took. There are also other numerous mentions in book of divers disturbing a U-boat war grave by taking all kinds of artifacts and human remains. There are pictures of this as well as written descriptions.
I agree, let's hope we can find and identify this U-boat for the sake of the families as it would give them some closure to the death of their relative. Thankyou for reply to the forum. Sincerely, 1inCanada.</HTML>
