<HTML>Dear Walter

Many Thanks

I think in this instance Clay Blair got it wrong, because of misleading information from the British. The escorts had left OB288 in the morning of the 23rd and the attack took place that evening - also Montgomery had not been part of the escort for that convoy.

Cristiano D'Adamo has done a lot of work on this one and he has unearthed a letter from the British Admiralty to their Italian counterparts dated 1948; this admits that the claim that a Sunderland aircraft sank the MARCELLO is not correct [as MARCELLO was in port at the time]. Also the claims that thePERIWINKLE or HURRICANE did it don't hold water because the British ships were too far east at the time - in any case neither obtained evidence of a kill.

I found a report from the MONTGOMERY but that also says attacked firm contact but no evidence of a kill

All the best
