You did mention "on board ww2 submarines"........
U.S. Submarines had two electric motor-driiven vapor-distillers in the Engine Rooms, that produced about 1000 gallons/day, when they were working properly. Most of this water was used for the propulsion batteries and cooking meals. Creature comforts, like
bathing, was secondary.
Badger and Kleinschmitt were the manufacturers.
