Hallo Rainer,
No American Lib was downed that day by eenemy action. Both machines you menion were Liberator II from 224 Sqn. the first machine lost was Liberator "G" FL 959, shot down as you say at 09h39 by Lt. Knud Gmelin, 13/KG 40. The machine was crewed by:
F/O J V Gibson, Pilot
P/O K T Every
P/O V Lower
F/O H R Tierney
Sgt A A Thompson WOP/AG
F/O P P R Mackintosh
W/O W J Vocasivich WOP/AG
Sgt K Graves
Sgt H T French, Engineer
All were KIA.
The second machine, Liberator "P" FL 938 was chased by Messerschmitts ME 110 G from 2/ZG 1. Inn one of the attacks, the pilot, G H Wharram was killed, as Sgt E A Moloney. Sgt R J Foss took over the controls, but with one engine knocked out, a second on fire and the remaining two cutting out, his only option was to ditch which he did successfully, all the still living crewmembers leaving the sinking plane.
They were first "rescued" by an U-boat, which commander turned his command away as he noticed the men floating in their dinhy were British; a Sunderland spotted them again on 6 September but they were finally rescued on the September 9; by that time, F/O J C Miller was already dead and P/O W R Collins and Sgt D H Bareham died aboard HMS Wild Goose.
The full crew was as follows:
F/O C R Wharram Pilot, KIA
Sgt R J Foss, 2nd pilot
P/O W R Collins, KIA
F/O J C Miller, KIA
Sgt E A Maloney, KIA
P/O J R Wilcox,
Sgt D H Bareham, Engineer, KIA
P/O Johstone,
Sgt M W Dilks
