Hi Howard, U408 being credited with sinking the O E and the Stalingrad, in the book 'US Marine Vessel War Casualties of World War II' by Browning Jr, He states it was U589 (Horror), was the U-boat, he apparently sighted HMS Avenger, and fired two torpedoes, which hit Stalingrad (103) first, the Oliver Ellsworth (105), in trying to avoid her was herself hit by the second torpedo. While Wynn although mentions U589, does not rule out U408. Am I right to assume both boats KTB's and Allied records have been studied, as to give the credit of the attack to U408. john
