The U-boot in question...

Look at U-570 under the command of Kptlt Hans Rahmlow.

The IWO (yes I know his name and have a copy of his death certificate) escaped from Grisedale Hall and hoped to get to Birkenhead(?) and scuttle the U-570 but, he was chased and, unfortunately shot and killed in his brave attempt.

Yes there was a trial, of sorts, by his peers and he tried to make amends for the actions of his commander.

You cannot say that the crew were ill trained, if they were then so were all the U-boat crews!
Mutiny? not that I know of in the Kriegsmarine at that point in the war.

The U-boat in question was commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Graph.

There have been films made and books written about this incident but, it was and still is a sore point with German submariners.
