Gold cross U-129 Drewello???

Hello,
Quite accidently I found the name of my husband's grandfather (Herbert Drewello) on www.uboat.net.
He is enlisted individually on this site for receiving the German gold cross. He was on U-129. Does anyone know why he received this cross? What exactly is the rank of "Matrosenobergefreiter"?
This is very fascinating to discover for my husband and myself. Unfortunately, grandfather died October 1994, so we will never be able to discuss this with him.
If I looked correctly on the site, there is no personnel file on him...
