Bernhard Berndt's body was not returned to Germany, but was buried in the German War Cemetery on Cannock Chase. My dad was actually a member of the Home Guard party that pursued Bernhard and unfortunately had to shoot him. I understand that it was never known whose shot was fatal. Before my dad died, we were able to visit Bernhard's grave,to pay our respects. My mother was from Satterthwaite and my parents were married in Satterthwaite Church.
