Hi VEK et All,
I must admit that I am surprised that Germany has just commissioned two new U-boats and may probably commission two more.
I read, earlier this year, that Germany really has no operational need for U-boats now, neither has Denmark for that matter. The only navies that could possibly need them are the Royal Navy and those belonging to France, the USA, the USSR and China.
It is a bit like Great Britian keeping the Parachute Regiment (it is highly unlikely that troops will ever be parachuted into action again) or the Household Cavalry (used to guard H.M. on ceremonial occasions but they will never go into action again with gleaming breastplates and the sunlight glinting on their swords)
Personally I do hope that Germany keeps some U-boats as it was only a few years ago that the only submarine patrolling British waters was the rather old U-12 - all those in the R.N. were incapacitated (a.D.) for one reason or another.
Kind regards
