There is a tiny element of truth here... German freighter submarines traded with the US, or more specifically, DuPont during the period in WW I when the US was technically neutral. They carried dyestuffs and other chemicals from Bayer and/or I G Farben to the DuPont plants on the lower Delaware. Needless to say, this p...ed off the British, and it also came to an abrupt halt when the US joined the other Allies in 1917. I think there were about 10 trips but I stand to be corrected.
