See Operation Elster

[66.102.7.104]

Paul Lawton is listed in the above article. While having dinner with Lawton and Volkmer Koenig, Lawton asked Koenig about the escape attempt.

A strange thing about Operation Elster, Koenig stated that the German POWs were not aware a prison break attempt from Camp 70 at Fredrichton. With nothing to do in England while they were being held after the war, all prison break attempts were discussed and there was no discussion of an attempted break from Camp 70 at Fredrichton. Was this an attempt by the allies to lure a U-boat to the Canadian coast?
An escape (Operation Kiebitz) did occur in September, 1943 from Camp 30 at Bowmanville Ontario. The Commander of U-536 had been told that other attempts to liberate POWs from Canada had failed.
Later, I asked Koenig about the Camp 70 attemped break and received tha same answer.
