Mike,
In Hans Goebeler's 'Steel Boats, Iron Hearts'he talks about all the various emblems the U-505 had, and the reasons for each. Great insight on the decision making process and the value the crews placed on these symbols.
I know the shell was added for or by it's last Commander, Harald Lange, I just don't recall the specifics.
If no one else replies I'll try to find the passage and post an update later.
