I am most interested in any of the long range Aquila boats, notably Ammiraglio Cagni which surrendered at South Africa in September 1943, as US Magic intercepts detected a message from General Touransouke Kawashima on 7 July 1943 requesting shipment of Czechoslovakian Uranium ores.
I am curious how much the surrender of this boat may have contributed to Allied knowledge of Japan's A-bomb project and whether any of the Italian boats at Portland went on to land US emmisaries in northern Italy for operation Sunrise please ?

I wonder if anyone can tell me the ultimate fate of Cagni ?

Supposedly the wrecks of these boats would, if they had carried radioactive material still have some trace of radiation. UIT 24 and 25 scuttled in Suido Sound, Japan might prove the link that way aswell. These boats were part of the fleet featured on the recent documentary "Sen Toku."

Wrecks of UIT-23 might prove some link with uranium shipments too. I sem to recall she was sunk in shallow enough waters that some crew swam to the surface.
