Hi John

The ship was the German motor tanker BENNO, the former Norwegian OLE JACOB. The ship had been captured by the raider ATLANTIS in the Indian Ocean on 1 Nov, 1940 and brought to Kobe, Japan. A prize crew then took the ship to Bordeaux, arriving on 19 Jul, 1941.
The Germans then renamed the tanker BENNO and used her as blockade runner between France and Japan, leaving Bordeaux in August 1941 and arriving in Kobe in October 1941. She was back in Bordeaux in early December 1941.

On 22 Dec, 1941, the BENNO left Bordeaux again for Japan, but the next day she was damaged by depth charges from a Sunderland flying boat of 10 RAAF-Squadron in the Bay of Biscay. The Germans tried to get back to France by sailing close to the Spanish coast, but the tanker was torpedoed by a Beaufort aircraft of 22 Squadron.

You can find more informations about OLE JACOB on this page:

Best regards
Rainer
