In fact, it was counterproductive: there would've been the natural tendency to let your guard slip a little after you've been 'taken in' by escorts - even subs. But this was dangerous as these 'scorts' couldn't help you much and certainly couldn't look out for you very well either!
Arguably, the blockade runners would've been better off on their own and keeping on their toes.
