Ken,

Defensively arming merchant ships was very effective in World War I. Based upon the information in "British Vessels Lost at Sea 1914-18", the success rate for U-boat gunnery attacks falls from about 70 percent against unarmed merchant ships to about 25 percent against defensively armed vessels.
