Hi having just watched on National Geographic the NOAA footage of the search for the wreck of U576 (UK BBC TV) it revealed the boat was resting upright leaning on her starboard side with much of the hull above the sea bed. It however also showed NO sign of any battle damage from both gunfire and depth charge attacks but not having plunged out of control down into the sea bed, but more of a controlled diving. She looked remarkedly in good condition considering how long she's been under water, basically intact only the wooden features missing. It also showed that the escape hatches were closed indicating no attempt was made by the crew to escape.
Speculating due to the lack of visible damaged, she went down in a controlled dive maybe her commander hoping to play [dead], with no warships in the immediate area to hunt her, but for an unknown reason tragically for her crew did not resurface. John
