<HTML>Dear PAPPY:

You write, \"I\'m sure the German Navy food was also good . . .\"

Well, I\'ll tell you. Next to the trauma of having one\'s vessel sunk and then being taken prisoner, the quality of the food aboard the German raider MICHEL in 1942 was the big surprise.

The coffee was Ersatz; \"Vier Fruchte Marmelade\" was disguised turnip, turnip, turnip, and turnip; the black bread contained 20% wood flour; the potatoes were dehydrated. Bean soup containing bits of Wurst was the main meal served at noon every other day.

Prisoners received the same food, and in the same quantity, as did the German crew. It is possible the German officers fared better. I don\'t know. On special occasions such as Easter and Pentacost, sumptuous meals were prepared for all hands, but, of these, I have only read.

Supposedly, U-boat food was good, but if compared to what the MICHEL\'s galley offered that is not much of a recommendation.

Cordially.

George.
