<HTML>Generally it was considered that the food on U-boats was sufficient and gave all necessary nutriments and vitamins.
Even if signs of vitamin missing never were found, complements in vitamin A, B1 and C were given when the mission lasted more then two month.
The problem with food was the conservation and the storage especially on type VII.
Boats of type IX D, X B and XIV had deep-freesing chambers of 2 to 3 square meters.
During the war drying technics improved and were more and more used for potatoes, fruits and vegetables.
For bred, sausages, bacon, ham and eggs special coating pastes were developed for a better conservation.
A special naval institute for food conservation existed in Hannover.
The cooks for U-Boats had a special instruction in a training office for U-boat cooks in Neustadt.</HTML>
