<HTML>The general classic of US sub operations in the Pacific is Clay Blair\'s \"Silent Victory\".

However, because of the broad view of the work, the treatment of each sinking is brief.

The U-537 was sunk in mid November, 1944, by the USS Flounder, north of the Lombok straight (Southern Indonesia, east of Java). Like most US sub sinkings of enemy warships, this one used ultra intercepts to locate its prey. Whether that was a German or Japanese intercept is not clear. Since the US commander \'saw the U-boat go down\' I got the impression the German sub was running on the surface.

The USS Besugo sank the U-183 on april 23, 1945, off of Surabaya, Indpnesia. The u-183 was running on the surface. One POW was recovered. The U-boat was flying a Japanese flag.

More detailed treatments may be available.

Both U-boats were apparently caught unaware on the surface and sunk like ducks in a shooting gallery, not in sub to sub combat.
