I found some information of the sinkings of these 2 U-boats in a book by David Stevens called U-boat Far From Home. It is about the patrol of U862 to Australian w& New Zealand waters in 1944-45. It includes u-537 which was also part of the planned operation and give details of the radio encryption used to track the U-537 and the moves to intercept her with the U.S. submarine. Alos includes Captain Stevens attack procedure using his stern tubes and electric torpedoes.
A breifer outline is given re the radio encryption of u-183 movements but clearly shows that the route was known and the besugo was aware that the U-boat was due. U183 was actually the first U-boat actually ordered to patrol against the American shipping in Pacific waters and was on her way to the area north Dutch New Guinea to attack shipping supplying US forces in the Philipines.
