U 166 Type IX C
Built by Seebeckwerft, Wesermünde
Keel laid 6.12.40
Launched 1.11.41
Comissioned 23.2.42

1st Patrol:
30.5.42. Left Kiel in transit to western France.
U 166 put in her new base at Lorient on 10.6.42
2nd Patrol :
17.6.42 Left for operations in the western Atlantic.
From early July, u 166 was patrolling N of the Greater Antilles. On the 11th she sank the sailing vessel Carmen (dominican, 84t), off Cabrera, Dominican Republic. U 166 sank the steamer Oneida (US, 2309t) on the 13th off the eastern tip of Cuba, and on the 16th she sank the fishing vessel Gertrude (USA, 16t) by gunfire NE of Havana.
U 166 moved into the Gulf of Mexico and on the 25th she laid mines off the Mississippi estuary. There is no record of any ships being sunk by these mines. In the late evening of the 30th the boat sank the steamer Robert E. Lee (USA, 5.184t) off the Mississippi Delta.
On 1.8.42 U 166 was sighted on the surface by a US Coast Guard J 4 F aircraft of 212 Squadron (Ens H.C. White) South of Isle Dernière, Louisiana. The Houma-based aircraft sank the boat with depth-charges.
There were no survivors
