Only 2 Tankers are listed as sunk by Jap Subs in Dec -41
according to Rohwer:Axis Submarine Successes of WW II:

On 20 Dec (Emidio source),or at 07:31 on 21 Dec (I-17 source),
US Steam Tanker EMIDIO,6912 tons built in 1921,was hit & sunk by torp
from Jap Sub I-17,CO Kozo Nishino,in 40*30´N-125*00´W.

At 05:45 (Montebello source) on 23 Dec
US Steam Tanker MONTEBELLO,8272 tons built in 1921,was hit & sunk by torp
from Jap Sub I-21,CO Hiroji Matsumura,in 35*30´N-121*15´W.

I-21 later on the 23rd also damaged US Steam Tanker IDAHO,6418 tons,
with gunfire.
