<HTML>I agree with you on some of your points about it being a temporary set back but having worked in the oil refinery business and help design components for the industry I can tell you they are ALWAYS one step from becoming an inferno. It does not take much to put one in flames even 60 years later. A nice incendiary round would start a fire so bright that it could be used to navigate at sea.
I think the reason you needed waves of bombers three miles wide and five miles long is even with the norton bombsite the allies still were not getting the damage they wanted and Germany switched to cottage industries. But any damage to a U.S. facility especially in the war build up stages when production can not be moved easily to another location like it could two and three years later would have hurt the U.S. global response. You could attack it ONLY once though.
