Success - at last!

While we couldn't ask Grandpa, who is suffering a continuing severe loss of memories, we were able to locate furter information in an old diary.

He was a trainee for Technical Lieutennant, and visited severeal boats during that time.

In November 1941 he was aboard U 560 under Oberleutnant z.S. Ernst Cordes, his dutys were those of Oberfähnrich (Ing.) Zentral- and E-Maat.

On 11, 27th 1941 they were practicing a nocturnal attack, while at half past ten a.m. a Fangboot, "Panther" collided with them on the starboard side of the engineroom. Through doorsized whole water penetrated the area and drowned several men.

The next passage of the text wasn't quiet clear to me. It seemed that the Commander, LI, WO, some Commander-pupils, the helmsmen and the lookout were either on the tower and due to the collision washed into the see or some were drowned.

The LI pupils couldnt't exit through the tower, water was constantly pouring down on them. So the went into the Bugraum and shut the Kugel-luk. The boat stopped it's decent in about 40 meters depth.

Approximately 1/2 after the accident, they managed to exchange morse-code messages with aides from outside.

They used Tauchretter to keep the air clean. One was broken and injured the man, who wore it, severely.

Around midnight the preesure difference beween ship and outside was adjusted, so that they could exit through a luk. The injured man was transported first, our grandfather went out last. They were transported to a hospital in Memel.
