William Thomson was my father-in-laws father. We always thought it was an accident in the engine room but we recently found a letter sent to William's wife on 20th January 1943 from The Thompson Steamshipping Company that says:
"It is with regret that we have to inform you that we have received a cable from the Master of the s.s."Empire Ruskin" advising us that, as a result of an explosion caused by a burst steam pipe in the crew's accommodation on the 18th January, twelve members of the crew were killed, and we are very sorry to state that your husband. W.C. Thomson, Fireman, was one of those who lost his life. The burial of the deceased members of the crew takes place a British Mediterranean port tomorrow. We have no further details at present but, in the meantime, we offer to you and the bereaved relatives, our deep sympathy in your tragic loss sustained byt this distressing accident."

We think we also have a letter from the Padre on the ship but cant find that at the moment.
