PINE was commanded by Lieutenant John Hird RNVR when she was lost.
She was part of the escort to coastal convoy CW.243 through the English Channel. They were approaching Selsey Bill when at 01.23 they were warned by shore radar of three groups of vessels moving toward them at high speed from the south. The eastern group of hostiles were tackled by the escort destroyer Quorn, whilst the Albrighton intercepted the centre group. The third group passed to the west, crossing the head of the convoy before turning to close from the inshore side. These were torpedo boats of the 5th S-boat flotilla, and in the subsequent torpedo attack, two ships in the convoy, the Emerald and Caleb Sprague were torpedoed and at 02.45 the Pine had her bows blown off, but she remained afloat. The trawler Rehearo closed and took her in tow, and later that morning was relieved by the tug Resolve, but at 13.25 she sank, then being six miles to the west of Selsey Bill. Ten men were killed.
I am uncertain which S-boat was responsible
