Hi Mark
Truly interesting what you bring up here!
Rohwer apparently did not have Allied times at hand when he made the assessments for the events in the night of 26/27 September 1941.
The time 2235(Z+1) and the description of the sinking of SIREMALM fits perfectly for the attack of U-124.
27/0208 U-201 fired a spread of two torpedoes at a 5000 tons freigther and a nearby corvette - observed a bright flash close to the escort and merchant sinking immediately
27/0209 U-201 fired the stern torpedo at a 3000 tons freighter and missed
27/0211 U-201 fired a spread of two torpedoes at the 3000 tons freighter and an overlapping freighter - observed two hits on the 3000 tons freighter, sinking not observed
One torpedo of the first spread apparently detonated prematurely (the bright flash) close to LEADGATE, while the other apparently hit CERVANTES (the freighter observed sinking immediately). It seems the stern torpedo was then fired at SPRINGBANK, which was seen passing between this ship and LEADGATE. The second spread of two torpedoes then hit the SPRINGBANK and sank her.
Best regards
