Hi Eric,

She wasn’t sunk by a U-boat – she ran aground.

SS OKLAHOMAN. Master: James McKenzie ... Ship left Brooklyn May 17th for Providence where cargo was loaded. Left there May 27th and arrived NY. the next day and anchored at Stapleton. Left NY. May 30th, anchored overnight in Lynnhaven Roads, and arrived Trinidad June 9th. Left Trinidad the next day unescorted ... Grounding occurred at 0150. After floating free, the Master determined his position in the dense fog and made for Capetown at full speed. When she commenced taking on water in the three forward holds the Master ordered the ship abandoned ... Four boats were launched. Survivors picked up by patrol boats and taken to Capetown ... The Master, Chief Mate, 2nd Mate, Chief Engineer, and four others remained aboard but were forced to jump overboard and climb on rafts as the ship started to go down.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
