There was also a French ferry ss Sussex built for London, Brighton & So. Coast Railway Co., Newhaven in 1896; sold to Chemins de Fer de l’État Français in 1914 with the L. B. & S. C. Rly. Co. acting as managers.
On 24 MAR1916, when en route from Folkestone to Dieppe, this ferry was torpedoed by UB-29 (Herbert Pustkuchen), and very seriously damaged, 18 miles W by N of Boulogne (50 casualties).
After repair, she was used as a minesweeper under French naval requisition. Sold to Greek owners in 1921, was renamed Aghia Sophia and broken up soon thereafter.
UB-29 became notorious for its participation in the first « unlimited submarine war ». As it happened to the SS Lusitania in May 1915, she torpedoed without warning, the French ferry SS Sussex on March 24, 1916. The ship did not sunk, but the attack not only caused the death of fifty passengers but had important political consequences. It forced the Germans to sign the Sussex promise ; namely a suspension of the unlimited submarine war and attacks on allied ships carrying civilians. A promise that was only sustained until February 1917.
