This is my second posting as regards U701. I'm a collector of military
timepieces and purchased a WW2 era German watch marked, on the dial, ASTER, and on the back DU. Nothing really unusual. However, stamped (twice) into the back of the case is: u.701! Since U701 was not particularly famous I can only assume that someone, with a connection to the boat, had it so marked. Since Horst Degen and his 7 survivors spent some time in US POW camps, including Camp Devens, Mass, I'm very curious about the watch. Konrad Knirim and I agree that it's not "Wehrmach-issued". The stamping DU is German military designation, but the meaning is in dispute. No, it doesn't mean Dienst Uboot! I have researched as far as I can into the fate of the survivors----apparently all are sadly deceased. I'd like to hear some opinions on this. I don't feel it was attempt at fakery.
