Hello Ghostmoore (P),
I have searched the internet for two days and the best that I can find is that there was a piece of linen sown into the front peak area to provide the stiff peak to attach the insignia. Below are two examples:

[www.relichunter.com]
However, there were many different cap makers and several shops that made special ordered caps. So I can not rule out your metal clip, but it does not appear to be a normal item during WWII.
