\"Das boot\" is a movie from a novel but it is closely related to factual events. I suggest you look at the story of the \"real\" U-96 and cross check the profiles of the characters who really manned that submarine in the \"decorations and awards\" section of this site. You will find something interesting.
To be back home alive was the most sought award :-) but
I conceed that postumous awards were quite liberally given :-(
