Not many in the Uboat arm of the Kriegsmarine, apart from commanders, received the Ritterkreuz. There is some information on those receiptants on the uboat.net itself.

Forget all about Das Boot, it was a film of a novel as has already been pointed out and the late Kapt.z.S. Merten, U-68, did write something along the lines of \"No it was not like that\" but he and Buchheim did not see eye to eye.

Remember that war on land, sea and in the air three different senarios and often not compatable concerning the awards of medals.
Finally dont make the mistake of comparing the Victoria Cross with the Ritterkreuz.
