Hi Fin B
Good point about ASDIC & Tesla inventor of ASDIC.
However, he is a small history about ASDIC being used in WWII.
At the time- when it was needed most, the art of anti-submarine
electronics was still in a primitive form. The British warships were
equipped with the ASDIC system which was named after the
Allied Submarine Detection Investigation Committee, formed during
WWI, but a main drawback was that its sonar devices only did
functioned when a ship was moving slowly on the surface.
Using ASDIC and D/C, the Royal Navy did manage to account
for 16 U-boats in 1940. But this was a hopelessly meagre total
and well over 1,000 ships hit the ocean floor that year.
It was obvious to all the world at war that the Kriegsmarine had
gained the upper hand and was winning the Battle of the Altantic
at that time.
