Dan:
The Tradewind's primary purpose on the patrol I wrote about was to recruit Malay sailors, train them, and then insert them to act as "coastwatchers. Thus the presence on board of the two American OSS officers. One of these fellows, who, as I said lived in Virginia after the war, was Ray Franklin Kauffman. I can't come up with the second man's name.
Re the u-168, in the mid-1980s I made my peace with the Germans. My initial contact was Konrad Hoppe an officer in the raider Michel which sank my ship and captured me. He had served briefly in the u-168 and when she was sunk he was commanding a small German U-boat base at Soerabaya, Java to which the u-168 was bound. He and I have deeply discussed that entire situation.
I have recently (2008) published a book covering my entire participation in WWII. Its title is "Ambushed under the Southern Cross" and is available at all internet book sellers. Amazon uk carries it and I have sold several copies there (if you are in Europe). Also, for some general information, go to www.usmm.org for a number of related maritime articles.
Steady as she goes!
George.
