<HTML>Hi Brian
This one is quite difficult.
Rohwer only mention the attack by U-407 on a cruiser in grid CN3254 and credited this boat with damaging the HMS Newfoundland. The position given by the British is 37°03N/15°24E or off Syracuse.
The Ascianghi was sunk south off Augusta and I was not able to find an position or informations about casualties. Did the Italian submarine sink with all hands? Fired she torpedoes on the cruiser force or was she sunk in an attack attempt?
Rohwer does not list her attack, so she probably not fired torpedoes.
Only a few informations are aviable to me.. perhaps someone know more about this incident?
Regards
