I have lived in Norfolk all my life and I can confirm that you did see a U-Boat. I am 57 and it was there when I was a kid. We used to ride our bikes down and check it out. Not sure how or why it was beached there but it stayed there until they built a second bridge tunnel that parallels the original span.
They had to remove it to build the new span. By the time it was removed it was just a rusty framework. When I was young it still had enough decking and hull to identify it as a U-Boat.
I have looked for additional information about it's history without success.
Hope this helps.
