Re: US submarine operations in the Atlantic

Hi UBS:
U.S. Submarine Squadron 50 was stationed in Roseneath, Scotland. It consisted of the
Submarine Tender USS BEAVER (AS-5)and six new Fleet Boats; USS BARB (SS-220), USS
BLACKFISH (SS-221), USS HERRING (SS-233), USS SHAD (SS-235), USS GURNARD (SS-254),
USS GUNNEL (SS-253). They conducted 27 war patrols in Europe, especially near Bay of Biscay. Two encounters with U-boats, but there is no record of sinkings. Six of
the boats participated in "Operation Torch" at North Africa. By mid 1943, all were sent to the Pacific theater to sink Japanese ships.
