Hi Stiggy
A difficult case you have here. The source for the serial AM689 mentioned on our page about U-73 is the book "U-boat versus Aircraft" written by Norman Franks and Eric Zimmerman.
Ross McNeill identifies the aircraft involved in this incident as AM698 in the rafcommands.com forum and judging on the detailed research he has done on the RAF Coastal Command losses from primary sources he is most likely correct. Hudson “W” of the same squadron was reported missing on the same day and it seems to be that by coincidence its serial could have been AM689 (if the identification by Alan Storr in the list of RAAF casualties is correct).
However, did you receive a scan of the logbook mentioned by George Wilkins yet? Ross McNeill writes in the rafcommands .com forum that AM638 was supposedly assigned to 500 Squadron and failed to return on 13 Jan, 1941 – he assumes that the aircraft was actually assigned to 5 OTU. To my knowledge the logbooks of aircrews were handwritten in narrow tables and are often hard to read. Is Hudson “M” listed more than once in the logbook of F/Sgt. Wilkins with the serial 638? Have you informed Ross McNeill about your discovery?
Best regards
Rainer
