Hi Rainer,

Sure, handwriting is often a real problem ... the details on my own father's service record are very difficult to decypher ... but I've now seen a scan of the logbook entry, and George's Grandfather had very clear handwriting ... there is no mistaking the serial number AM638 and 'M' for the date, 27th December 1942. He also gives all map reference details which tie in with the position given by U-73's captain. On the same page, Sgt. Wilkins clearly records flying in the same aircraft AM 638 'M', piloted by P/O John Pugh, and dated 20th December 1942 on 'A/S sweep Muscara 1', taking to the air at 6.30.

I've been in contact with Ross McNeill, and he is going to check his files.

As to F/Lt Desmond Victor Varian's Hudson 'W' lost on the same day this is recorded in the Australian Archives to be AM689!

All the best to you,
Stiggy
