Hi Stiggy
Well, sometimes I should read our own pages. The aircraft that carried out the first attack on U-73 that day was already identified as Wellington LA971 (179 Sqn RAF/T) and the second attack was the Hudson flown by P/O Pugh.
However, we still don't know if FH426 really transmitted a message that they were about to attack a submarine and when this was sent. Can you ask Ross McNeill if he has the Operations Record Books ( ORB ) for 179, 233 and 500 Sqn for that day and if he could check them for us? Maybe the area of "Mascara No. 1" is described in the ORB of 500 Sqn? Also the question of how long the Hudsons of 500 Sqn flew with US markings should be mentioned in the ORB.
IWM has a photo of FH426, showing substantial damage by AA fire in the starboard wing: [www.iwm.org.uk]
Isn't it possible that FH426 was fitted with the more powerful R1830 engines when the damaged wing was repaired?
Best regards
