<HTML>Officially Argentine was neutral. Neutral ships had their name and flag painted in large scale in order to be visible. Anyway those actions (the refuelling of the U-boat and the following aerial attack) were embarrassing facts. Diplomatic complications could arise, and Argentine was selling meat and corn to the Allied. Better to put that question under the carpet. Also Portugal equally traded with both sides.
