Hello Tony,

this documentation, - I am sure you can get a hold of by contacting ZDF (zweites Deutsches Fernsehen) -, might provide further infos as to your doctoral theme.
As experts you have an English and German historian explaining tactics from either side concerning the uboat-war. What kind of surprised me was it was claimed that Dönitz was pushing Hitler to declare war on the USA after Dec. 7th 1941 because he thought the Americans to be unprepared and for his uboats there was easy prey to be made on the coast of the USA, Drum- Beat. Dönitz might have had in mind o.a. the sinking of the Reuben James on Oct. 31st 1941 by U-552. (See William Manchester: The Glory and the Dream, A narrative History of America 1932 – 1972, page 235 et. seq.), mentioning Hitler kept his cool when Raeder tried to push him to retaliate against America`s violations against the rules of war when they helped to protect British convoys on their way to Britain prior to Dec. 1941.
Also interesting was that the English Prof. stated that cracking enigma was important for sure but what made the difference in fighting the German Uboats significantly were radar Astic allied Air Forces etc.
Good luck with your dissertation “Herr Doktor in spe”
You all have a nice day.
Sincerely Yours
