Dear Sir ,

On the 31 st August 1942 about 2.14 pm the SS Winamac was torpedeod and sunk by
U- 66 off the Veezuelan Coast. My father who was on board this oil tanker at the time
was able to successfully launch one of the Lifeboats which enabled about 21 in total of the
crew to safety ,sadly however the wireless officer who was the last one to leave the
stricken vesseldied on board the life boat due to the inhalation of crude oil while swimming towards the lifeboat.

The survivors were eventually picked up by a ship called Empire Lugard and disembarked at Trinidad.

Iwas told this account of the sinking by father about 6 weeks before he died in 1986.

So my question is Part of the account he gave was that the German U- boat actually surfaced and documented the sinking of his ship and slipped away .
I believe that U- 66 was able to unload this film footage so could you confirm
this as I do know from checking onweb sites that U-66was eventually sunk.
Iwould like to see the film footage if possible

Best regards Reg Isaacson

PS My fathers name on crew list was William Leonard Smith.
