<HTML>Gentlemen:
The U-853 (Fromsdorf) torpedoed the American collier BLACK POINT in the late afternoon(local time) of May 5, 1945 in a position off Block Island which is part of the State of Rhode Island. This was after Doenitz\' cease fire message to his u-boats at 0800 on May 5 (German time).
Unfortunately for the U-853 a destroyer, a frigate, and two destroyer escorts were short distances away. These vessels probably destroyed the U-853 with depth charges. Throughout the night additional attacks were carried out, resulting in considerable debris rising to the surface. At daylight, two Navy blimps arrived, to assist in the attack. Later, a Navy diver descended to the wreck and identified it as the U-853.
Much has been written about this incident as it was the last sinking in American waters. The company which owned the BLACK POINT remains in existence, and
on the 50th anniversary of the sinking distributed a brief video of the underwater scene today.
Cordially.
