The loan question was intricately and inextricably tied into international negotiations at the Postdam Conference and the Tripartite Naval Commission constituted thereunder. High politics was the underlying cause, international diplomacy the solution.
It was an extremely complicated matter.
The loan period for U-2518 was extended again in the early 1950s, and only then was the boat given a French Pennant Number and a French name.
There is evidence for a French identity having been reserved for U-2326. The boat was lost before any steps in this direction could be taken though.
