My dad, who was in the army in Florida at that time, talked of reporting a suspicious vessel on radar. He knew something was up when 5 aircraft launched and went full throttle toward the ocean, instead of making their usual takeoff toward land before making a long, lazy turn. His commanding officer later told him that they had attacked a German sub.
