I read Arthur’s book on U-859 and loved it because it has such meaning to me. The U boat was a very special part of my life as I was one of the first few divers who found the wreck together with another friend Liew Tung Hoe. We were part of the original team of 6 independent divers who started the salvage of the U-859 and recovered 12 tons of mercury from the u boat before being muscled out by a country that had vested interested. I have swum around the wreck and often imagined what it was like at that instant of sinking. As the captain and officers perished inside a locked compartment, many times I must have been just a steel hull away from their remains. Now that I’ve read Arthur’s book, my heart goes out to the crew that perished onboard. How I wished that we could have completed the Salvage so as to enable us to collect the remains of the crew and present them back to Germany. We found the U-boat sitting level on the seabed split in two at the conning tower with each half about 40 feet apart. Thank you for writing the book Arthur you would have been pleased to know that the saga of the U-859 carried on long after she went down. Rest in Peace Arthur.
